A new species of Campylothorax (Collembola: Paronellidae: Paronellinae) from Northern Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Santos,Inaura P. da Silva; Cipola,Nikolas G.; Morais,José W. de; Bellini,Bruno C..
ABSTRACT Campylothorax viruaensis sp. nov., a new species of paronellid springtail from the Amazon Rainforest, state of Roraima, Brazil, is herein described and illustrated. The new species is characterized by: pale yellow body with dark blue pigment on abdomen III and IV; dorsal chaetotaxy presenting S5i macrochaeta on head, mesothorax with 6-8 macrochaetae in p1-4 complex; A5 as macro or microchaeta on abdomen IV; collophore anterior side with 4+4 anterior long chaetae; and mucro with five teeth. Other characteristics usually omitted in traditional descriptions for the genus are presented such as morphology of apical region of third and fourth antennal segments, labial papillae, chaetotaxy of subcoxae, collophore, abdomen V and ventral region of head....

A study of the morphoanatomical characters of the leaves of Chamaecrista (L.) Moench sect. Apoucouita (Leguminosae-Caesalpinioideae) Acta Botanica
Coutinho,Ítalo Antônio Cotta; Rando,Juliana Gastaldello; Conceição,Adilva de Souza; Meira,Renata Maria Strozi Alves.
ABSTRACT Little attention has been paid to species of Chamaecrista sect. Apoucouita (Leguminosae-Caesalpinioideae), especially regarding anatomical studies. When only vegetative material is available, the identification of such species may be difficult. Additionally, vegetative material of some species of C. sect. Apoucouita may be even harder to identify because they can resemble species of Inga Mill. (Leguminosae-Mimosoideae). The present study focused on recognizing morphoanatomical characters of leaves that are taxonomically useful for the species of C. sect. Apoucouita by employing standard anatomical techniques. The arrangement of the vascular system in the petiole/rachis, dorsiventral mesophyll, mucilage idioblasts in the epidermis of leaflets and...

Electric eels galore: microsatellite markers for population studies Neotropical Ichthyology
Souza-Shibatta,Lenice; Ferreira,Dhiego G.; Santos,Kátia F.; Galindo,Bruno A.; Shibatta,Oscar A.; Sofia,Silvia H.; Giacomin,Renata M.; Bastos,Douglas A.; Mendes-Júnior,Raimundo N. G.; Santana,Carlos David de.
Abstract Fourteen novel microsatellite loci are described and characterized in two species of electric eels, Electrophorus variiand E. voltaifrom floodplains and rivers of the Amazon rainforest. These loci are polymorphic, highly informative, and have the capacity to detect reliable levels of genetic diversity. Likewise, the high combined probability of paternity exclusion value and low combined probability of genetic identity value obtained demonstrate that the new set of loci displays suitability for paternity studies on electric eels. In addition, the cross-amplification of electric eel species implies that it may also be useful in the study of the closely related E. electricus, and to other Neotropical electric fishes (Gymnotiformes) species as tested...

Geographic pattern of genetic diversity in natural populations of Rosewood (Aniba rosaeodora), in the Central Amazonia Acta Amazonica
Santos,Ronaldo Pereira; Ângelo,Paula Cristina da Silva; Sampaio,Paulo de Tarso Barbosa; Quisen,Regina Caetano; Leite,Ângela Maria Conte; Oliveira,Cristiane Lopes de.
Rosewood (Aniba rosaeodora Ducke, Lauraceae) is an Amazonian evergreen tree and a source of the purest linalool, the main component of its essential oil, which is very valuable in the international perfumery market. After decades of over-exploitation it is currently considered as threatened. We evaluated the genetic diversity and its distribution in four populations in Central Amazonia. Thirty-five reliable RAPD markers were generated, of which 32 were polymorphic (91.4%). Variation was higher within the populations (76.5%; p < 0.0001) and geographic distribution contributed to population differentiation (23.4%; p < 0.0001). The Amazon River had a small influence on gene flow (3.3%; p < 0.0001), but we identified evidence of gene flow across the...

USING DIAMETER VARIATION INDEX OF PIONEER SPECIES FOR CLASSIFICATION AND MODELING TROPICAL FOREST YIELD BIOFIX
Nascimento, Rodrigo Geroni Mendes; Machado, Sebastião do Amaral; Figueiredo Filho, Afonso; Higuchi, Niro.
This study sought to classify the productivity of a representative area of tropical forest, as well as to analyze the relationship between the structural variability of pioneer species and the yield of three management regimes. The study area is located at the Tropical Forestry Experimental Station belonging to INPA (National Institute for Amazon Research), approximately 90 km from downtown Manaus, in the State of Amazonas, Brazil. Data were collected from twelve 1 ha sample plots. Diameter was measured annually for all individuals with DBH  10 cm between the years 1990 and 2008. Pioneer species served as the basis for calculating the Diameter Variability Index VI% over time. Three classes of variability were established according to the guide curve...
